What I wouldn't give to sing those two lines to thousands!!
My wife and I seem to be spending rather a lot of time in front of the curtains over the last few weeks! And it has to be said, whenever I am sat in the stalls I wish I was the other side of the curtain!
We went to see Joseph and His Technicolour Dreamcoat with some friends at Hull New Theatre last night. I had never seen this show before, whether done professionally or by amateurs, but I had the soundtrack on cassette when I was younger. I was over the moon when our friend managed to get us some free tickets for last night's performance. It was good to see a show entirely based on music, with no spoken libretto.
Bill Kenwright's production is so well thought out and barely stops to let you catch your breath. The dancing and choreography in particular was excellent, although I did notice that one of the girls in the chorus was a bit jittery, she seemed to be dancing at double time to everyone else during the jazzy numbers, maybe she'd had a few espressos before going on. Look out for the blonde girl if you are going before it finishes on Saturday!
The guy playing Joseph was very capable, but I got the impression that he was saving his voice, as he spoke quite a few words during songs rather than singing them. I can't say I blame him though as they are doing a lot of performances this week (a matinee every day, for the schools, and two matinees before the evening performance on Saturday) and that's before moving on the the next stop on the tour!
I did think that the end was a bit drawn out, when it turns into more of a rock concert with reprise upon reprise, with Joseph asking if you want some more! It's great for the kids though, and this is quite obviously aimed towards children, but enough to keep the adults amused. And with songs like that, that get everyone up dancing, you cannot help but leave with a smile on your face!
