Last night were the auditions for Hessle Theatre Company's autumn production of Mixed Doubles, a series of comic scenes around the theme of marriage, to be staged at Hessle Town Hall, near Hull towards the end of October.
I have to say that last night was the best night's entertainment that I have had in a long time. The auditions were hilarious, for all the right reasons. A lot of the auditionees were very good, and I hope that the casting committee have got what they wanted from them. The only thing is, and this is an issue for a number of productions, and is certainly the case in a lot of theatre groups, is a lack of younger men to take on roles. I'm not sure if there is a historic reason for this. My guess is that theatre is just not seen as being "macho" enough for younger men; I would also class this as narrow-mindedness! Having said that I only started doing this when I was 29, but that was mainly down to a lack of confidence and never having had the opportunity; drama or singing was never really something that was pushed in my formative years. But believe me, I'm making up for it now!!!!! I think my wife wishes she never suggested it, she never sees me anymore. At least she TELLS me that's a bad thing!?!??!?!
Anyway, back to the point. As I say there was a distinct lack of men last night (compared to the women that is), and as I result I ended up auditioning for 5 roles! Not really what I expecting, but everyone got into the spirit of things and had a really good laugh. I'm just hoping I'm not cast in 5 roles!!!! That might be a bit much to handle!
